Curating My Style

The best way to describe my style is structure. I am a girl who enjoys the look of a crisp blazer, or a pair of straight cut jeans. (I also like structure in my life, but that is a different topic.) I found my love for structured/masculine looks after I moved to the colder climate. It's pretty difficult to rock a blazer in the sweltering 90 degree weather of Florida. Below are some of the factors I look into when shopping for my petite curvy body.

For my short curvy frame, I find clothes with defined points like a strong shoulder, or cinched waist balance out the overall curviness of my body. I will try to have as many of the following elements in my outfit.
This look has the defined waist, along with exposed ankles.

Structure

  • Defined waist
  • defined shoulders
  • Set ankles
  • exposed wrists
  • In the picture above the skirt has a stiff fabric, that sits nicely over my lower half.
Although coat is draping the shoulders adds definition

Subdued Prints

  • small in size
  • stripes
  • herringbone
  • checkered
I love over-sized button down shirts. The are comfortable and always look effortless. This one I rolled the arms up, to expose the wrists, and closed the collar all the way up. my neck and wrists are the smallest part of my body so I want to highlight those areas by cinching in.

Natural Fabrics

  • Cotton, linen, merino wool, silk
  • Tencel, viscose, modal, rayon
Breathable natural fabrics, are great for the skin, and overall comfort. Over the years I have stopped using polyester, acrylic, and nylon clothes mostly because I dislike the way they trap body odors. I am a bit apprehensive about wool, cashmere and silk, just because of the hassle of dry cleaning, and the cost (both monetary, and environmental).

Dresses

  • short dresses 30 in long from shoulder to bottom hem fit perfectly above the knee
  • High cinched waist elongates my lower half
  • midi dresses are closer to ankle length dresses on my height
  • Fit and flare shaped dress give the illusion of high waist and long legs

Bottoms

  • inseam 26.5 in - 27.5 in
  • straight leg, skinny leg, wide leg, ponte pants
  • mid-waist  to high waist
  • dark tones

Colors

  • Each outfit has about 3 colors (or three separate patterns). Black and white excluded.
  • "60-30-10 rule" When working with three colors, main color should be 60%, complementing color 30%, and accent (contrasting color) 10%.
  • Ex: In the above pic my main color is the blue jeans, the plaid blazer is my complement color, and the brown boots and bag is my accent color.
  • easier to manage is 2 colors, 70-30 rule. With monochromatic look and few accents pieces in the same color
I am still on the hunt for a winter coat, and a nice trench coat. I haven't really figured outerwear, but hopefully soon!
